Highlights 2005

PAN Training and Development May 2 - 6, 2005

As a consequence of the successful trial of a PAN Training and Development Program in 2004, a second program was able to take place in Melbourne during 2005. This was made possible through the combined efforts and support of TOFI’s six partner organisations, a grant from the Australian UNESCO National Commission and not least, the contribution of airfares by the Fijian participants.

The following educators, pictured below from left to right, participated in the 5 day program:

Franco Rodi Director, Curriculum Development Centre Solomon Islands
Elena Seninawanawa Science teacher, St Joseph’s Girls’ SS Fiji
Alumeci Francis English teacher, St Joseph’s Girls’ SS Fiji
Luisa Kamenio Deputy Principal, St Joseph’s Girls’ SS Fiji

Program Highlights

The program aimed to increase the participants’ general knowledge and skill base relating to the use of information and communications technology, provide opportunities for shared dialogue relating to the use of ICTs with colleagues and students in their schools and workplaces and provide specialised training in the use of the TOFI intranet tools for professional exchange and learning purposes.

In addition to the professional exchange and learning that occurred, the program also provided many opportunities for fun, laughter and learning about each other’s cultures and customs.

Two key outcomes to date are:

  • A significant increase in the number of TOFI registrations from Fijian educators, supporting the potential for cluster learning at the local level in Fiji.
  • A further grant from UNESCO which will support the implementation of a 2006 PAN Training and Development Program in Honiara for 15 project officers at the Curriculum Development Centre and 8 of their educator colleagues who are based in schools and the teacher training college.

TOFI broadcasts into the Pacific

During the 2005 PAN training program, the Teachers of the Future Initiative gained some well-deserved publicity thanks to Radio Australia. Heather Jarvis, the presenter of ‘In The Loop’, a magazine program broadcasting to Radio Australia listeners in Pacific countries and territories, invited Luisa Kamenio, Franco Rodi and Bronwyn Knox to talk about TOFI in a live-to-air interview. TOFI thanks Heather for providing this opportunity.

You can listen to the 15 minute interview by downloading the file at the following link .

This is an mpg file whch you can play on many types of multimedia devices. Please note that you will need Quicktime on a Macintosh computer or Windows Media Player. This is a very large file (15mb) so it is better to download it onto your computer and then play the file.
